~ONE AM RADIO~ is the musical project of Hrishikesh Hirway, a composer and songwriter from Los Angeles. The One AM Radio's sound is often characterized by Hrishikesh's lush, soothing vocals over dream-like instrumental arrangements. He does most of his own recording, playing several of the instruments and producing all the beats; the style borders electronica, folk, post rock, chamber music, and ambient music. Live, he is joined by a changing line-up of accompanists.

Born in Massachusetts, Hrishikesh began The One AM Radio while a student at Yale University, where he studied art and film. Despite their sound, The One AM Radio has often played shows and released records within the DIY, hardcore punk scene. Hirway's family is from India, and in 2005, Hrishikesh moved to Mumbai to work on his music. He returned to Los Angeles in 2006, and released his third studio album, This Too Will Pass, in early 2007.

Pontiac's autumn 2006 television commercial features The One AM Radio song "What You Gave Away (alias Remix)," from the album On The Shore Of The Wide World. ~ Wikipedia

LYMBYC SYSTYM

Hailing from Tempe, Arizona, Jared and Michael Bell formed Lymbyc Systym late in 2001. Drawing inspiration from the groups Tortoise, My Bloody Valentine and Four Tet, their compositions cleverly combine vintage keyboards, infectious melodies, analog effects, dynamic drumming, and intricate laptop programming to form melodic and cohesive tracks that blur the borders between post-rock, indie-rock, and folktronica. As the opening act for the Album Leaf, Mice Parade, and a slew of other national acts, the brothers have developed a truly impressive live show. From their self-release debut EP, Carved by Glaciers, to the current music for LymbMush Records,Lymbyc Systym have quickly carved out a place in the bustling underground music scene.

MONTAG

Born in Gaspé, Québec, and raised in the icy Kuujuak in Québecs north and Montréal, Montag is regarded as one of Canada's most distinctive electronic musicians. Montag is celebrated among music aficionados for his sophisticated compositions, mixing analog, electronic and acoustic instruments into rich soundscapes and melodies. He earned international acclaim for 2005s Alone, Not Alone (Carpark Records/Gooom Disques, France). In an enthusiastic nod to the albums dip into nostalgia, Pitchfork Media noted, [Montags] droll lyrics and gorgeous, slightly icy melodies expand upon the traditions of the '60s French pop icons while honoring them, as he emotes with precision, restraint, and a sardonic eye."

Montag has shared bills with indie greats such as Broadcast, Lali Puna, Feist, Stars,Xiu Xiu, The Russian Futurists, Ulrich Schnauss, Ghislain Poirier, Hood and The Organ . He has performed at numerous international music festivals including Pop Montreal, Mutek, Montreal Electronic Groove (Montréal), SXSW (Austin, TX), Canadian Music Week (Toronto) and Sonorama (Guadalajara, Mexico) . Recent side-projects include remixes for Canadian friends Stars, Québécois legend Jean-Pierre Ferland and the American indie rock group Snowden; a sound commission by French CBC scoring poetry by author Kim Doré; a music composition part of "The Hearing Eye", and a multi-disciplinary video/sound project for Gallerie Clark in Montréal.

United Steel Workers of Montreal return to Pepper Jack's for another extraordinary night of foot-stomping "Citygrass". Voted "Best Bar Band" in the Montreal Mirror, USMW are still riding high in support of their much praised second album, Kerosene and Coal. The six-piece band takes off from varied influences, giving Kerosene & Coal their own unique sound. Gern f.'s gritty voice trades off growls and whispers, providing a boisterous counterpart to Shawn 'Gus' Beauchamp's earnest, emotionally raw vocals on songs such as "Ask Me To Stay" and "Union Man". But it's Felicity Hamer who delivers the knockout punch, revealing the emotional power of the Steel Workers as she turns a sultry rasp into a satin-smooth drawl. Gern and Gus have perfected their two-guitar attack, while Matt Watson's soulful telecaster roots you to the speaker. Roger Dawson's stand-up bass provides deft backing and Kevin McNeilly plays banjo and mandolin with feverish intensity.

Cincinnati Records presents LOKA(Ninja Tune, Liverpool)
http://www.myspace.com/lokafireshepherds
THE RIDERLESS
DJ SOLID OAK

Loka evolved from studio experiments between Mark Kyriacou and Karl Webb back in 1999. The duo signed to the Ninja Tune label a year later and their first track 'My life's in these bottles' appeared on Ninja Tune's 'Xen Cuts' Compilation. The single 'Beginningless' Followed and in 2006 Loka released their debut Album 'Fire Shepherds' to rave reviews. Gigs and a radio session for Giles Peterson's Radio 1 show followed as well as a Live performance at the Colchester signals film festival and headlining the jazz night at the Liverpool Music week. Loka also took on remixing duties, on Blockhead's seminal track 'Sunday Séance' turning it into a breathtaking 6 minutes of a full on live jazz drum orchestrated epic
Loka has now grown from the duo that started out in 1999 into an eight piece live monster. The Line up now includes: Guitar – Karl Webb, Keyboards and electronics – Mark Kyriacou, Keyboards – Catherine Norman, Bass Guitar – Tom Sumnall, Drums – Ged Hawksworth, Percussion – James Pagella, Tenor/soprano saxophones and flute – Ray Dickarty and Trumpet – Rory Gordziejko

As well as playing at the 'Synch' music festival in Athens Greece in July 2007, Loka will be touring Canada in August through to September 2007, culminating with a performance at the prestigious Guelph Jazz Festival.

JARET KOOP

ALEX CUBA is a Cuban-born multi-instrumentalist who now makes his home in Canada. He is kept busy pushing sophisticated Cuban sounds into the mainstream. From his earliest years in Artemisa, a town about 60 km from Havana, he was immersed in music. Alex's first stage appearance on national TV was at the tender age of four, playing claves (a percussion instrument) in a group directed by his music instructor father. Alex went on to study guitar, tres, percussion and bass, practicing eight hours a day during his teens.

AlexCuba has performed for festivals in the US and Canada, sharing the stage with Seu George and Jose Gonzalez at Central Park Summer Stage in New York to Feist at the Regina Folk Festival. He has opened for The Blind Boys of Alabama, Cesaria Evora and Ron Sexsmith.

New for Alex is the electric guitar a vintage Gibson that brings a trademark sound equal to his magnetic appearance. His latest album, Agua Del Pozo, showcases Alex Cuba as a singer/songwriter who is continuing along a path he first struck out on bridging his Cuban roots so evident in his song writing with his musicianship reflecting the jazz he studied with elements of funk and early rock.

After having a vote, the subscribers to our mailing list (Maybe you voted too?) decided that we should do a video for “Take This Heart” from our latest CD, New Set Of Rules, and post it on YouTube.

“London Town ” was a very close second, so we’re considering doing a video for that one, too.

Here’s the link to the video of “Take This Heart” on YouTube. Watch it again and again and share the link with your friends:

THE LEBLANC NEWSLETTER - DEBUT ISSUE (F. THE LATE DOUG RILEY)
As you may know, I am no longer at Billboard after close to 17 years. However, as I have been a music industry journalist for 40 years, I will continue writing and being a commentator on TV. I certainly have enough work at hand. This summer has been quite busy. I wrote reports for The Foundation to Assist Canadian Talent on Records, as well as Canadian Heritage.
I am now writing liner notes and an accompanying biography for Anne Murray Duets: Friends and Legends, recorded with legendary producer Phil Ramone. Anne has re-recorded some of her best-known hits with Shania Twain, Nelly Furtado, Emmylou Harris, Carole King, Jann Arden, kd lang, Isabelle Boulay, and Shelby Lynn.
While I do have several offers to write for publications, many music industry people have urged me to make continued use of my extensive e-mail list—nearing 6,000 names worldwide-- to write a regular blog. I don’t want to. Most blogs seem to be rants with little information. However, I feel an informative newsletter on the music industry in Canada—including overviews of label, retail and publishing activities as well as noting key releases—might be more appropriate.
Without a trade paper in Canada, now that The Record and RPM Weekly have gone, I think there’s room for a weekly (or so) newsletter — The LeBlanc Newsletter. It won’t be my full-time gig—Billboard certainly wasn’t—but it will hopefully shed a light on our industry. Feel free to pass it on or post it on your website when appropriate. For its debut, here’s an article on the late Doug Riley—Dr. Music—who passed away this week. I hope you enjoy it.
Larry
_____________________________________________________________
The LeBlanc Newsletter - August 29/07
If Toronto had a Music Row or a Broadway, its lights would be dimmed this week in the memory of 62-year-old keyboardist/arranger/producer Doug Riley, who passed away Monday (Aug. 27). He was en route from Calgary back to his home in Little Pond, Prince Edward Island, after headlining a jazz and blues festival. Today (Aug. 29), Doug’s wife, Jan, and their sons - Ben, a 31-year-old drummer, and Jesse, a 28-year-old police officer - are in Toronto to meet the body and return it to Prince Edward Island.
Doug-- a Canadian mix of Duke Ellington, Allen Toussaint, and Henry Mancini-- was not a household name to Canadians, although he was awarded the Order of Canada in 2004. However, widely known as "Dr. Music", his music was played in almost every Canadian home for decades. The loss to Canadian cultural life is immeasurable.
Only a handful of top musicians in this country past age 35 didn't work with Doug in one project or another over the years. His workload--from writing three ballets for the National Ballet to doing jingles and recordings and working alongside symphony orchestras and with Placido Domingo, Measha Bruggergosman, and Ofra Harnoy--was staggering.
Born April 24, 1945, in Toronto, Doug suffered from polio as a child and took to the piano as a way of expressing his creativity. At four, he took lessons in classical piano at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto. Later, in Montreal, he studied pipe organ with Harry Duckworth at St. Anne de Belleville Church and piano with Paul DeMarky.
"Ray Charles was my first influence outside of boogie woogie and stride pianists like Albert Ammons and Fats Waller", said Doug in a 2006 interview with the Toronto Star. “When I was six, I discovered jazz from my dad's stride and boogie piano 78s - Meade Lux Lewis, Albert Ammons, James P. Johnson, Fats Waller - I had perfect pitch so I learned from the records.”
Doug went on to earn a Bachelor of Music in composition from the University of Toronto while playing on the local R&B circuit. Forty years ago, Toronto was a British WASP backwater with its best-known musical exports being the vocal acts The Diamonds, The Four Lads and The Rover Boys.
In the 1960s, as pop music took hold internationally, Toronto became the music mecca of Canada. On the Yonge Street strip downtown, Arkansas rockabilly cat Ronnie Hawkins, backed by Levon & the Hawks (later renamed The Band), reigned at Le Coq d'Or. A handful of clubs on Yonge Street, like the Friar’s Tavern, The Zanzibar, The Bluenote, and the Colonial Tavern booked local bands. Most local bands, however, played the Southern Ontario high school circuit booked by the Ron Scribner Agency (later renamed The Bigland Agency). This included such R&B bands as The Lincolns, Little Diane and the Starlights, David Clayton-Thomas and The Shays, R.K. and the Associates, Ritchie Knight and the Midnights, the Du-Kanes, Little Caesar and the Consuls, The Five Rogues, and The Silhouette Review featuring Dianne Brooks, Jack Hardin and Little JoAnne.
I met Doug during this period when he played with the Silhouettes. I booked them several times at Dunbarton High School in Pickering and saw them play such hot club spots as The Gogue Inn, The Bluenote, and The Hawks Nest.
My life turned around in 1964 when Doug’s close friend and long-time collaborator, David Clayton-Thomas, released a smoky, funky rendition of John Lee Hooker’s "Boom Boom" with his band, The Shays. It was only a regional hit, but it had a vocal that stopped you in your tracks. The single was one of the reasons I wanted to cover the local music scene as a music journalist. Clayton-Thomas later made his mark, with some encouragement from Doug, more forcibly with his next band, The Bossmen...one of the first rock bands anywhere to incorporate jazz musicians. In 1966, the band released the explosive anti-war single "Brainwashed", a jazz piano/rock guitar roar of fear and refusal, tougher than any rock recording you can name from the era.
In Yorkville Village's bustling coffeehouse and club scene then, we heard bands such as The Mandala, The Ugly Ducklings, Jack London & The Sparrows (later renamed Steppenwolf), The Paupers, Luke and the Apostles, Jon & Lee and The Checkmates, and The Mynah Birds (featuring Rick James and Neil Young), as well as such Canadian folk acts as Ian & Sylvia, Gordon Lightfoot, Joni Mitchell, Buffy Sainte-Marie. There also was a growing jazz scene there downtown, highlighted by the superb musicianship of Doug Riley as well as Lenny Breau, Hagood Hardy and Moe Koffman, local jazz players of dizzying technical prowess.
After Yorkville flamed out in the early '70s, and as many of these musical figures left Toronto to achieve stardom in the U.S., such local acts as Edward Bear, Motherlode, Rush, Triumph, Lighthouse, Downchild Blues Band, The Good Brothers and pianist Hagood Hardy would also make their marks on domestic and international charts.
In 1968, Doug was hired to be the second keyboardist and arranger on Ray Charles' Doing His Thing LP. Charles asked him to join his band, but Doug opted to stay in Canada. Doug had started writing music jingles in 1964 and had written over 2,000 by the early '90s, working with producer Mort Ross (with whom he co-founded the Revolver label with future Triumph member Mike Levine working A&R), and then with Tommy Ambrose and Larry Trudel.
In the early '70s, Doug became a partner in the Toronto Sound Recording Studio, the first 16-track studio in Toronto. In 1971, Moe Koffman approached GRT Records of Canada with the idea of making contemporary jazz and pop-style recordings of classical music, with Doug producing and arranging. The first, Moe Koffman Plays Bach (1971), went gold (50,000 units) in Canada, as did the 1972 follow-up, the two-album Vivaldi's Four Seasons, which featured interpretations by Koffman and by Riley of Antonio Vivaldi's compositions. In total, Doug recorded nine albums with Koffman for GRT Records of Canada before its demise in 1979.
His pop/rock ensemble, Doctor Music, also recorded for GRT and scored national hits with "Sun Goes By" and "One More Mountain To Climb." Meanwhile, Doug served as arranger/pianist for a slew of TV shows in the early '70s - "Music Machine, Tommy Ambrose's "Celebrations", "The Wolfman Jack Show", "The Ray Stevens Show", and so on. Doug served as Musical Director of the Famous People Players for over 20 years.
Over the years, Doug arranged or played on more than 300 albums, including for Dan Hill, David Clayton-Thomas, Anne Murray, Sylvia Tyson, Molly Johnson, Jake Langley, Serena Ryder, Natalie McMaster, the Brecker Brothers and Bob Seger.
“Doug was not only a simply fabulous musician with a God-given talent, but also an unassuming, sweet guy”, summed up Toronto-based publisher/producer Frank Davies in an email to industry contacts this week. ALTAMONT, N.Y. – What has been the largest Irish Festival on the planet is growing in 2007 to a two-day celebration – Sept. 14 and 15 – at the Altamont Fairgrounds.

The 11th Annual Irish 2000 Music and Arts Festival has added an all-new Celtic punk rock festival on Friday night. On Saturday, the festival rocks on with more than 20 performances on three stages, with a fourth stage dedicated entirely to Celtic dance and pipe bands – another festival first.

“Expanding to two days gives us the opportunity to devote Friday night to great Celtic rock. Then, on Saturday, we return with 12 hours of non-stop music -- with more rock and traditional music.”, said Matt Nelligan, President of Irish 2000.

Saturday’s featured performances include The Celtic Tenors and Gaelic Storm, the group that appeared as the steerage band in the movie, "Titanic".

Friday evening has performances from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. by The Barley Boys, Enter the Haggis and the Street Dogs, with Flogging Molly – a seven-piece Irish-American punk band formed in Los Angeles – headlining the evening.

On Saturday, the festival is underway from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. with an outstanding line up of entertainment:

On the Contemporary Stage:

The Barley Boys, The Clumsy Lovers, Celtic Cross, Young Dubliners, The Tossers, Seven Nations, Enter the Haggis and GMT (Greenwich Mean Time).

On the Traditional Stage:

Give Way, Kevin McKrell, The Celtic Tenors, Teada, Gaelic Storm, and a two-hour performance by local favorites, Hair of the Dog.

On the Regional Music Stage:

Storyteller Bairbre McCarthy, Emish, St. James Gate, Frank Jaklitsch and Steve Gray, Kevin McKrell, Flynn 529, Cluidan, Dicey Riley, Clumsy Lovers and the Barley Boys.

On the Grove Stage:

Celtic dance by the Scoil Rince Criost an Ri and the Farrell, Boland and Campbell schools of Irish dance; the Braemer School of Scottish Dance; with performances by the Schenectady Pipe Band and the Albany Police Pipes and Drums.

The 2007 festival has the new addition of a Celtic Critters exhibit to its Celtic Kids Family Fun Area that features games and rides. The festival also has a wide variety of refreshments and Celtic crafts.

Tickets for Friday only are $15 in advance and $20 at the gate. Tickets for Saturday only are $15 in advance and $20 at the gate. Children under the age of 10 are admitted free. A two-day pass is $25 in advance sales ONLY. There is a $3 parking fee. Group rates are available by special arrangement by calling 1-888-414-3378.
